Problem: the Compaq Presario CQ56 does not turn on

Solution: Reballing video chip Compaq Presario CQ 56

The reason for this anomaly is to look for the welds of these components, represented by lead-free balls (balls) that are used to comply with RoHS standards during welding processes.

These directives establish rules regarding the restriction of the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (AEE) : the problem is that the lead-free tin tends to with time and temperature to fracture, as can be seen in the following photo taken under the microscope:

To solve the problem there is no alternative: you need to rework the graphics chip and probably also the chipset; in most cases of Compaq CA56 that I happened I had to remange the BGA ATI and a simple reflow of the northbridge chipset. We start disassembling the machine, bearing in mind that the repair is applicable to all CQ56 models including 105SL and 109SL .

Among the adaptable solutions is the rework of the graphic processor by reballing or complete replacement of this component.

We then start disassembling as usual the bracket and all the panels on the base and all the peripherals.

We put battery, memories and WiFi module

Then we close the keyboard, inserting a thickness to unhook it.

Unplug the keyboard flat, screws, connectors and flat beneath the keyboard compartment.

With a plastic screwdriver or screwdriver, separate the two housings to get to the motherboard.

 

So we got to see the motherboard.

We disconnect the plug of the video connector and disconnect the WiFi antenna cables as well as the webcam cable that are all connected to the video panel. and the screws that secure the display to the base ..

We remove the screen from the rest of the pc and proceed with disassembly.

Now we remove the remaining screws, flat and connectors that remain on the motherboard and remove it from the body:

And here’s the motherboard. We have to unplug all the elements attached to it, the buffer battery, the heatsink and the fan, and all the rubber parts that might melt with the high heat:

The Compaq CQ56 that you see in the photo has on the motherboard the following screen prints: DAOAX2MB6E0 / DA0AX2MB6E1 / DAOAX2MB.

Lifting the heatsink we can see the AMD CPU and on the right the ATI graphics chip on which we have to react with reballing. Or – if I really get sick – we can buy a new one and replace it.

We clean all areas to work well, removing the old heat-conducting paste.

We then start reworking the ATI graphic chip as usual by using the right thermal profile.

Of course, in the case of reballing, 99% of the laboratories will use lead-free pond so the BGA will not have the same problems in the future: for this we also use the same approach to Compaq CQ56. Let’s proceed to the detachment of the component to be worked, starting the heat process, not before applying the no-clean flux.

In case of reballing of the Compaq CQ56 or in case of complete replacement of the video chip, we are able to detach the BGA using our good air or infrared station, we remove the residual pool / board component by using braid (all operations to be carried out with the utmost delicacy is worth the detachment of some track ….)

As usual, we turn the tin balls (possibly with lead-bearing tin) using a special stencil (direct or not) and we get to the perfection of the component on the board.

Obviously if for cleaning I can use a classic Amtech ‘fake’ flux (on the market are almost fake) for ball and component soldering on the motherboard I use an Amtech 100% original …. bought from secure sources, with standard maturity and serial controlled on the Amtech site. Let us remember that using quality fluxes affects a lot on the goodness of the final work …

Here I even use a direct air stencil mounted on a spring clamp .

After the reballing step the BGA into the ultrasonic bath with a special liquid for a few minutes … this to purify somehow the pond

Then make a last cleaning by removing excess material with a beautiful brush

The important thing is the result …. ie a chip ready to be soldered on the motherboard

Apply aluminum tape to the motherboard (or as in the example below on an MXM video card) around the working area, then apply the specific flux ..

going for good .. without exaggerating otherwise being too reactive can attack the balls of tin …

I set the BGA to be reset perfectly online ..

Then I reflow to reset the video chip. In some cases, I also did a chip rework:

After the rework we can make a nice clean to the fan and the heat sink and we can proceed to apply the new thermal paste:

In some cases, with a fragility of the fan, which easily leads to breakage of a few pallets, I have replaced it with spare parts. The model installs a spare HP SPARE 606609-001.
